Crosswinds International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program
Crosswinds Arts and Science School was fully authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program (MYP) in July 2007. Our MYP model supports our science and art magnet foci. Through our Middle Years Program philosophy, we encourage our students to "participate actively and responsibly in a changing and increasingly interrelated world" (www.ibo.org). Through interdisciplinary learning, challenging assessment, hands-on instruction, service learning, and global appreciation and exploration, our Middle Years Program teaches how to go beyond simply memorizing facts to learning and evaluating information critically, then applying the learning to the word beyond school.
The IB MYP is designed for students between the ages of 11-16. At Crosswinds, we believe this program is the best educational model to meet the needs of all middle-level learners. "This is a time of uncertainty, resistance, sensitivity, and questioning, which requires an educational program that will help students develop the knowledge, attitudes, and skills they need to participate actively and responsibly in a changing world. Learning how to learn and how to evaluate information is as important as what students learn" (www.ibo.org).
All students at Crosswinds participate in the IB MYP. They study all of the required courses (language A, math, science, humanities, physical education, technology, language B, and the arts) with a concentration on guiding questions that incorporate the IB Areas of Interaction, encouraging interdisciplinary teaching, project-based learning, personal research, and community involvement. In addition, all students participate in community service-learning opportunities throughout each year of the program. Each student is also expected to demonstrate knowledge of the areas of interaction and a deeper understanding of their own learning process through a personal project that is the culmination of the program completed during year 5 (10th grade). © International Baccalaureate Organization 2006 |
