Crosswinds International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme Community Service is an opportunity for Crosswinds students to get
involved in the greater community. By volunteering, students gain insights
and understanding of the economic and physical needs of both local and
global community members. We hope that our students will develop a life-long
commitment to service to their greater communities.
All students are required to perform a total of 100 hours of community
service upon completion of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years
Program at Crosswinds.
These hours are broken down as follows:
- Year 1 (grade 6): 10 hours
- Year 2 (grade 7): 15 hours
- Year 3 (grade 8): 20 hours
- Year 4 (grade 9): 25 hours
- Year 5 (grade 10): 30 hours
What is a Service Experience?
Service experience is direct service or advocacy that is non-compensated,
non-credit, and should be at least one hour in length (excluding travel
time). Service experiences should relate to one or more of the following
categories:
- Fosters the dignity of the human person
- Nurtures community, family, or participation in society
- Supports basic human rights
- Serves the poor and vulnerable in society
- Protects the dignity and rights of workers
- Creates solidarity with people of other ethnic groups, races,
countries, or economic class
- Cares for the environment
Key Points and Common Questions
- Hours may be completed with any community organization that offers
volunteer opportunities, including opportunities to work with teachers and
other staff here at Crosswinds.
- A Community Service Documentation/Reflection Form must be completed
and submitted to the IB Coordinator to receive credit for each volunteer
experience.
- Community service hours need not be pre-approved. If a student is
unsure whether or not a particular activity could be considered community
service, he or she should contract the IB coordinator.
- Family obligations do not fulfill the Community Service requirement.
- Students may not earn community service hours for projects for which
they are paid, receive tips, or for which they are raising money for another
function, trip, or event.
- All students must have their hours documented for each year by the
final week of the school year. Hours completed over the summer will be
applied to the next school year.
