Health Education
The purpose of the health education program at Crosswinds is to help students develop both a knowledge base and a skills base to help them pursue a healthy lifestyle. The health habits created during adolescence effect students’ entire lives.
There are eight core areas, which will be explored during 6th through 10th grade. They include: - Nutrition – including at least one cooking lab per quarter
- Community and Environmental Health
- Family Health and Sexual Education
- Injury Prevention
- Mental and Emotional Health
- Personal and Consumer Health
- Physical Activity
- Tobacco, Alcohol and Other Drugs
Skills that are stressed throughout the curriculum include:- Accessing Information
- Advocacy
- Analyzing Internal and External Influences
- Decision Making/Goal Setting
- Interpersonal Communication
- Practicing Healthy Behaviors/Self-Management
Health Education for 6th-8th grade includes one quarter of instruction per school year. Because physical activity is in integral part of a healthy lifestyle, students participate in “Fun and Fitness” lessons approximately every third lesson.
Healthy Lifestyles is a class required of all 9-10th grade students. Students receive one quarter of instruction in classroom health and one quarter of instruction in an activity based physical fitness class. |
