Health Education

The purpose of the health education program at Crosswinds is to help students develop both a knowledge base and a skills base to help them pursue a healthy lifestyle. The health habits created during adolescence effect students’ entire lives.

There are eight core areas, which will be explored during 6th through 10th grade. They include:

  • Nutrition – including at least one cooking lab per quarter
  • Community and Environmental Health
  • Family Health and Sexual Education
  • Injury Prevention
  • Mental and Emotional Health
  • Personal and Consumer Health
  • Physical Activity
  • Tobacco, Alcohol and Other Drugs
Skills that are stressed throughout the curriculum include:
  • Accessing Information
  • Advocacy
  • Analyzing Internal and External Influences
  • Decision Making/Goal Setting
  • Interpersonal Communication
  • Practicing Healthy Behaviors/Self-Management
Health Education for 6th-8th grade includes one quarter of instruction per school year. Because physical activity is in integral part of a healthy lifestyle, students participate in “Fun and Fitness” lessons approximately every third lesson.

Healthy Lifestyles is a class required of all 9-10th grade students. Students receive one quarter of instruction in classroom health and one quarter of instruction in an activity based physical fitness class.
