Language Arts
The Language Arts curriculum at Crosswinds is designed around the Minnesota State Standards and the International Baccalaureate (IB) criteria. Rigorous writing expectations include both formal and informal writing. Students complete structured pieces several times a quarter at the lower grades and weekly at the upper grades. Through the course of their time at Crosswinds, students produce writing in a large variety of genres, including short story, memoir, drama, poetry, essay, letters, and directions. All students become familiar with the language of the 6 +1 traits of writing and the writing cycle (pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, publishing). In addition, students at all grade levels are expected to read six books independently per quarter as well as complete class reading work on fluency, comprehension, inference, and interpretation. House teachers plan interdisciplinary projects that also include reading, writing, and speaking components.
