Physical Education
Grades 6-8: Students will participate in a structured class designed to enhance students’ interest in lifetime sports and activities. An emphasis will be placed on instruction of fundamentals, rules, strategies, and individual physical fitness. Activities will include, but are not limited to, team sports, individual sports, dual sports, and recreational activities. All students will begin and end their time in physical education with fitness testing, which is used to assess the student’s levels of fitness in the following areas: cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition.
High School: The goal of Healthy Lifestyles is to provide an appropriate environment for students to learn and experience life-long fitness strategies, while exposing students to a variety of physical activities, as we build towards the application of physical activities throughout a student’s lifetime. Healthy Lifestyles will place a strong emphasis on the understanding and development of the five components of health-related fitness: cardiovascular endurance, muscle endurance, muscle strength, flexibility and body composition. Principles of fitness training will be incorporated, including the use of the FIT (frequency, intensity and time) variables. In addition, students will be exposed to and tested on skeletal and muscular systems. Healthy Lifestyles activities may include: fitness testing, cardiovascular workouts, strength training, stretching, bass mass index calculations, heart rate calculations, bowling, snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, broomball, team handball, orienteering, canoeing, yoga, and archery. |
