!Bienvenidos a la clase de espaņol!

All students at Crosswinds are enrolled in Spanish classes. We work with a textbook from EMC Paradigm called Navegando. However, our focus and area of concentration is on creating classroom experiences that prepare students for real-life use of Spanish. The goals of the Language program are:

  • Communication: Students practice Spanish speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.
  • Cultures: Students demonstrate an understanding of cultural practices and perspectives in the Hispanic world.
  • Connections: Students connect with other disciplines to reinforce and acquire information from a variety of viewpoints.
  • Comparisons: Students demonstrate an understanding of their own language and culture by comparing their experiences with the Spanish language and culture.
  • Communities: Students participate in the Spanish-speaking community here at home and around the world to develop positive attitudes toward other cultures and languages.
In all levels of the Spanish curriculum, we encourage connections with the other classes in which the students are enrolled. We frequently work on group projects. For example, Spanish students work with the healthy lifestyles curriculum as they cook. We make environmental and scientific connections with food production and gardening. Physical fitness is encouraged as we study soccer and baseball vocabulary and the importance of these sports throughout Latin America. Hispanic art, literature, music, and drama are sometimes addressed in both the Spanish classroom as well as the core class subject area.

The needs of advanced and Native speakers are met with the help of an amity aid. Each year, we work to provide the opportunity for all of Crosswinds students to work with a native speaker who is here as a guest and can provide first-hand cultural insights and native language experience. We are always looking for host families to help with the amity program.

Our curriculum begins with the 6th grade classes during which students are introduced to basic vocabulary. The focus of this course is on the variety of cultures in the Hispanic world. During this first year, Spanish students are introduced to basic grammatical concepts. They begin working on sentence structure and communication skills necessary to describe themselves and others.

Second-year Spanish continues with basic communication skills while introducing more advanced grammatical concepts. Students increase their speaking and listening skills. Irregular verbs are introduced and students begin to learn how to sequence events in time.

In the third level of Spanish, students begin to work in the past tenses. They express past events and continue with the concept of putting events in a proper sequence. Work at this level progresses beyond simple statements as students work on including more detail in their conversations and written work.

Fourth-year Spanish introduces students to the more-advanced verb tenses and structures. Writing skills are emphasized as students are encouraged to express themselves in greater detail.
