English Language Learner Proficiency Tests
The state of Minnesota requires the following assessments for English Language Learners (ELL). The ESL teacher, working in collaboration with classroom teachers, conducts these assessments.
  • Test of Emerging Academic English (TEAE)
The TEAE is a reading and writing test for English language learners that was designed to demonstrate growth in English from year to year. The TEAE is given to students identified as limited English proficient (LEP) in grades 3-12.
  • The Test of Emerging Academic English: Listening and Speaking (TEAELS)
TEAELS is a computer-delivered assessment of English language learners’ listening and speaking skills for grades K-12.
  • The Mathematics Test for English Language Learners (MTELL)
The MTELL is a new series of online assessments that will serve as a bridge to the Math MCA-II for qualifying English language learners in grades 3-8 and 11. The items are written with a reduced language load so ELLs can better demonstrate what they know and can do to meet grade-level math standards
EXPLORE Test
EXPLORE is a curriculum-based assessment designed to help students in grades 8 and 9 begin to develop a high school course plan that prepares them to achieve their post high school goals. The EXPLORE tests are normed for students in grades 8 and 9. Areas that are assessed include reading, English, science, mathematics, and “interest inventory.” All Crosswinds 9th grade students will participate in this assessment during the Winter quarter.

GRAD Testing
The Graduation-Required Assessments for Diploma (GRAD) measure the reading, writing, and mathematics proficiency of high school students. By requiring high school graduates to reach a specified level on each of these assessments, Minnesota is making sure its students are on track to have the essential skills and knowledge necessary for graduation in the 21st century.

The written composition assessment will first be given in 9th grade, the reading assessment in 10th grade, and the mathematics assessment in 11th grade.

Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments – Second Generation (MCA-II)
The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA-IIs) are tests designed to assist districts and schools in evaluating how their curricula prepares students for the state’s content standards. The MCA-IIs are not pass/fail tests. They are challenging tests and provide information about your child compared to state standards. These statewide tests chart the progress of schools and districts over time, generate information for school improvement and school accountability, and allow for comparison of schools and districts in Minnesota. The MCA-IIs are the state’s accountability measure required by the federal law “No Child Left Behind.”

All students in grades 6-8 and 10 in the state of Minnesota are tested in the area of reading and students in grades 6-8 in the area of math. Students in grades 8 and 10 will participate in the MCA Science Field Test in the Spring.

Minnesota Writes!
Minnesota Writes!, given in grade 6, is intended to measure the writing skills a student demonstrates at a given point in time. These skills are evaluated in a single, on-demand writing session. All students respond to the same prompt. Minnesota Writes! is a state-level assessment; it is not required for graduation or to fulfill the No Child Left Behind Act. It provides elementary and middle-level teachers with information about their students’ writing skills. The writing is an example of what students are able to produce without the assistance of teachers, peers, or writing resources.

NWEA - Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)
Our school uses Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) to provide teachers and families with an ongoing record of student progress. MAP are electronically administered and scored achievement tests designed to measure growth for individual students, classrooms, schools, and districts. While most tests simply provide scores that compare and rank students and schools, the MAP tests provide growth information that is vital in classrooms faced with helping students meet rigorous standards. The MAP tests are aligned to Minnesota Academic Standards. All students in grades 6-8 (and selected students in grades 9 and 10) will take the MAP tests in the Fall and again in the Spring. Areas typically measured are reading, mathematics, and science.

PLAN Test
The PLAN program is a curriculum-based assessment designed to help students in grade 10 explore the world of possibilities open to them, make the most of their opportunities in high school and beyond, and guide them as they start thinking about future educational decisions and career planning. PLAN assesses academic progress, provides an early indicator of college readiness, helps students understand and explore the wide range of career options open to them, and assists them in enhancing a high school coursework plan that prepares them to achieve their post high school goals. Areas that are assessed include reading, English, science, mathematics, and “interest inventory.” All Crosswinds students in grade 10 will participate in this assessment during the Winter quarter.
