Multiage Teaching
Multiage refers to a class of children of different ages grouped together for learning. This grouping is based on the knowledge that when instruction is appropriate and builds on previous learning, children learn best. Multiage classrooms emphasize the following: - A family atmosphere where relationships with peers and teachers are sustained over time;
- Acceptance and valuing of diversity when students interact with peers who are both older and younger;
- Instructional practices emphasize active experience based learning;
- Academic and social continuity ensure academic and social success;
- Use of flexible grouping based on changing interests, abilities, and needs; and
- That all children are valued both as individuals and as community members.
