Site Council Bylaws and Elections
Organizational bylaws were first developed in 2003 and revised in 2005. The bylaws describe the Site Council’s mission and purpose, structure, election procedures, terms of office, filling vacancies, and other related matters. (See link to bylaws below.)
Election Procedures The bylaws specify that the Council be composed of up to 16 voting members. Eight seats are held by parents/community members, and eight seats are held by teachers and staff who, in total, represent and reflect the diversity of the Harambee community. All members are elected to either a two-year or a three-year term. Terms are staggered so that about half of the Council is up for election every year. The principal is a regular participant at Site Council meetings but is not a voting member.
All parents and staff are encouraged to serve on the Site Council. Nominations are be solicited in the fall using a variety of communication venues, including the school newsletter, bulletin boards, the website, school committees, staff meetings, one-on-one contacts, and others. Nominees provide a short biography and/or statement to be distributed for school-wide review. A ballot listing all candidates is subsequently distributed, and the vote is tallied so open seats can be filled by the first meeting of the year.
