How to Bring a School-Wide Issue to the Site Council
One of the Site Council’s key functions is to provide a forum where problems and issues with school-wide impacts that focus on student needs can be brought forward for open and honest discussion.
However, not all issues are appropriate for the Site Council. Issues that are deemed inappropriate may be directed to the principal or to the district for further consideration. For issues that are accepted for review, the Site Council does not (and cannot) wholly take over a problem and resolve it. Instead, it may convene a meeting with all relevant stakeholders at the table, and help develop and lead a structured process to resolve the issue. Issue specifics aside, the Council’s overall strategy employs shared responsibilities, shared decision-making and shared outcomes.
In 2006, the Site Council revised and refined a formal “Issues Sheet” to initiate the procedure. Interested parties must fill in a description of the issue or problem, explain its school-wide impact on students, and recommend resolutions. A representative from the Site Council will be assigned to track each issue filed, and will serve as a liaison between the Council and the person(s) who filed the issues sheet for additional discussion and activities as needed.
